Saturday – Feast of St. Luke, Evangelist

Gospel – Luke 10:1-9

Following Instructions

Z Bread Prep

Sad to say, this was a terrible year for growing zucchini!  Whether it was the soil that, in the future, will need some fertilizing assistance or it was the local ‘critters’ enjoying the plants, the harvest was disappointing.  For the most part, I have been relying on local produce.  Thank goodness for Amish markets!   No matter!  I am still baking, even sending my sister back home to Maryland with a fresh loaf!

After all the years of making zucchini bread, I think I have reached a sort of muscle memory; the recipe is pretty much ingrained in my mind and my hands.  But that is not always the case.  There are plenty of times when I try out a new recipe and things go horribly wrong.  Either I miss a step in the recipe, or I forget an ingredient, or I substitute something that just doesn’t work.  In the end, it falls apart, mostly due to my own experimentation with the steps.  I guess it’s not all that different from thinking I have a better route to take than Google lady!

Jesus lays out quite clearly in today’s Gospel His own set of instructions, the recipe for being a disciple, a follower of Christ.  Step by step, He tells us what to do, what not to do, what to bring, what not to bring.  He instructs us how to handle rejection and how to respond to a welcoming faith. It’s all there; we just have to follow it step by step.

Is it any wonder then that we celebrate today the Feast of St. Luke, the author of today’s Gospel.  He was a physician by trade and a Gentile convert.  Tradition tells us he was also the writer of the Acts of the Apostles as well as the travelling companion of St. Paul.  He literally put into practice Jesus’ instructions to His disciples.  He did go out into the world!  He did spread the Word and preach the Gospel!  He spent his life as witness with his words and his actions.  His words today challenge us to do the same!  Jesus has given us our instructions.  We need only to follow them in faith!
