Gospel – Luke 14:1-6

Welcoming Attitude

Halloween Hijinks

It’s a different kind of Halloween we are celebrating today in Tennessee.  Even though I did buy a huge bag of candy, we do not expect any little trick or treaters to come knocking at the door.  In Chicago, we would normally see a constant parade of little ones as they made their way door to door along our street.  But, here in the country, unless they have a driver license or mom/dad are willing to shuttle them along the road, we won’t be seeing any costumed kids traipsing up the long driveway to our door!

I’m gonna miss the colorful costumes ringing the doorbell.  I’m gonna miss those expectant faces wondering what sugary goodies we will give them.  Most of all, I’m gonna miss those broad smiles of delight and mischief as they bounce down our stairs and dance expectantly to the next house on the block.  Of course, we still decorated our house for the holiday.  And I could still dress for the occasion (maybe Gandalf).  Only one thing left to figure out – what to do with all that candyπŸ˜‰

On a very simple level, the Gospel today tells of Jesus dining at a Pharisee’s house.  No matter what the motivation, at some point, Jesus came to his door, and He was welcomed into the Pharisee’s home. Halloween is a moment in time when we gladly rush to answer the door, eager to share smiles and sweets with the little ones.

Every day Jesus comes knocking on our door.  How welcoming are we?  How do we answer?  With joy and eagerness?  With fear and reluctance?  Do we run to the door with excitement, or do we pretend we aren’t home?  Jesus is calling!  How do we answer?
