First Reading – Exodus 40:16-21,34-38

Gospel – Matthew 13:47-53

Ad Majoriem Dei Gloriam

Mount of Beatitudes

I have a certain fondness and attachment to Loyola University of Chicago.  It’s where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Classical Languages and Education and my Master’s degree in Religious Education.  It’s where I began my career in education – first as a clerk in the Registrar’s Office, then Assistant Registrar and finally Assistant Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Of course, none of that compares with the fact that it is also where Ginger and I met for the first time in the LSGA Office.  And the rest, they say, is history.

Which makes today all the more special; it’s the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order, patron saint of soldiers, retreats and, most importantly, education!  It took a long period of recovery from wounds suffered as a soldier for him to turn away from the material world and dedicate himself to the religious life as a priest, spiritual writer, and founder of thousands of schools like Loyola and churches.

Which brings us to today’s Scripture readings!  One line stands out for me in the First Reading from Exodus.  “Moses did exactly as the LORD had commanded him.”  Imagine that!  EXACTLY!  Moses followed God’s instructions to the letter!  He didn’t cut corners!  He set aside all his wants and desires and surrendered himself to the will of God!

Sounds a lot like St. Ignatius – giving himself completely to the Lord – Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam – for the greater glory of God!

What about us?  Do we follow the Creator’s instructions?  Daily?  To the letter?  Exactly?  Why not?  Do we let our ego and selfishness get in the way?  Do we think/believe we have a better idea?  Do we think it won’t be noticed?  As we hear in today’s Gospel, what will God do with us when He casts that fishing net into the sea?  Are we a ‘keeper’?  Is our life dedicated to serving God by serving others?

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding,
and my entire will,
All I have and call my own.

You have given all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace,
that is enough for me.

Suscipe Prayer – St. Ignatius Loyola
