Gospel – Matthew 7: 15-20

Baaaaaad Prophets!

Our Neighbors!

Over the past few months, Ginger and I have developed quite a good relationship with our local sheep!  Whether we’re sitting on the deck or walking down to the mailbox, we are always greeted by a healthy chorus of “baa"!  And we respond in kind, although our side of the conversation is not very ‘authentic’!  At this point in our country life, I’d like to think we would recognize an interloper – a wolf in sheep’s clothing.  But who knows!

In today’s Gospel, Jesus cautions us to be wary of bad fruit, wolves in sheep’s clothing and false prophets.  We should be able to recognize those who are false or pretending to be something they are not!  They tell us what we want to hear and not what we need to hear!  They may preach the Good News but they do not live it out in their daily life.

True prophets inspire us by their witness and their wisdom. They challenge us to work toward a deeper relationship with God and with each other.  They challenge us to be on our guard against those false prophets who promise a quick and easy fix and they inspire us to bear good fruit of faith and love.
