Gospel – Matthew 23:13-22

The Blind Leading the Blind

According to Google, 93 million selfies are taken and uploaded every single day. Among adults 18-24, every third photo they take is a selfie!  The average person takes over 450 selfies every year.  Why do people spend so much time on taking selfies?  Is it image?  Are they so intent on impressing others?  Are they so worried about perception?  Think about it!  With selfies, we are the ones who control our image.  We can appear any way we want, whether it’s truthful or fanciful!  We control how others see us!

Is that any different with the Scribes and Pharisees in today’s Gospel reading?  Jesus calls them ‘blind guides’.  Consumed with pride and greed, they are more concerned with appearances and gold than with the faith of the people.  They maintain control over the Temple by demanding offerings of gold.  For them, image and power are everything!  Their external actions are completely empty of any interior faith in God.

What about us?  Are appearances everything?  Are we at times so concerned with our physical appearance that we forget about our inner soul?  Do we let pride sometimes get in the way?  Do we allow vanity to cloud our judgment.  The Pharisees and Scribes became blind guides for the people, the blind leading the blind.  May we never lose sight of what is in our hearts, what is truly important – love of God and love of neighbor

Sunday – Feast of Corpus Christi Gospel – Luke 9:11b-17 Loaves and Fishes Church at Tabgha Throughout those 2 years of isolation from Covid,   I really missed my St. Kateri community.   I missed my native brothers and sisters.   I miss crowding ourselves into the chapel on a Sunday morning for Mass.   And I miss our community potluck meal afterwards. I think that I missed that simple meal the most; it speaks volumes to me about the community and about the values that should define our lives.   I said a ‘simple’ meal but actually it’s more of a constant miracle.   Jody, our director, and/or Ginger provide the main course.   And that’s it!   All the rest – sides, salads, pasta, dessert, bread and drinks   - all of that is left to the community.   Bring something to share!   We never know how many people will come!   We never know what they will bring!   Ginger always calls it a “loaves and fishes” event! ...

  Second Sunday of Easter   Gospel – John 20:19-31 Faith and Family Us Decades ago, when Jaime was maybe 7 or 8 years old, I was having some stomach issues, bad enough to spend some time in the hospital to figure out what was going on.   Finally, one morning, with Jaime and Ginger in the room, the doctor comes rushing in to tell me in these overly blunt words – you have cancer, we will perform surgery today and start you on chemo treatments tomorrow!   After I got over the initial shock, I basically had 2 reactions!   First, how dare you blurt out such a diagnosis with our little daughter in the room without even consulting us beforehand.   How disrespectful!
