Gospel – John 3:16-21
Rainbow Bright!

Time to jog your memory a bit! If you were around anytime in the 1970’s all the way through the 90’s, you couldn’t miss him! Whether it was a World Series game, the Olympics, college football, and even Charles’ and Diana’s wedding, he was there, right on camera and waving his sign! You know who I mean – that guy with the wild beard and the rainbow-colored afro! That guy holding that simple sign that read: John 3:16!
I have to hand it to him; he was a great advertiser for the Bible. I mean, how many people ran to the Scriptures just to find out what the verse was! Even though at the time, there was no Google, you have to think it would have been the most searched-for verse EVER!
Which brings us to today’s Gospel – John 3:16! “For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” What better summary of our relationship with God! It speaks of His love for us, His sacrifice on the cross because of that love and His promise that those who believe in Him will have eternal life. Now that is what I call Good News!
It is a reminder to us all of the courage of the early Church – their love of God, their faith in Jesus Christ and their courage in the face of suffering and death. Let us pray for that same faith and courage in our own lives! And may our faith be expressed in word and deed, even in something as simple as a cardboard sign!
